The optical drive on my computer shit the bed, so I had to get it repaired, hence the delay in uploading the first "virtual 7" as promised in my previous update. But anyway, ta da. Here it is. Two new/old songs written and recorded by yours truly.

How soon until "antique websites" are a thing?
The next thing on the agenda is a planned series of "Virtual 7"'s", or "Cyber 7's", or "Information Superhighway 45rpm's". Or, well it's 2 mp3's with an img tag, really. Rather than wait to accumulate a whole LP worth of songs, which could take eons, I'll just share a couple of songs at a time as they are finished. I have a few that are about 98% complete (just need to hire a new didgeridoo player and remix the oboes), and about a half-dozen that are in various stages of non-completion. I feel like in this way certain songs can be paired together, like fine wine and cheese, rather than bundled, like damp firewood. What does an 'LP' even mean anymore, anyway?
I should have the first one of these interweb singles up in a week or two. My daughter will be here and obviously she takes first priority, but possibly when she decides to plunk down in front of her laptop and facebook the crap out of an afternoon, I'll find an hour or two to finalize the first couple of songs and share them. They're pretty good. Not Bell Biv Devoe good, but pretty good.

The trick is not to feel embarrassed by any of it
The next collection of songs is basically a mish-mash of most of the finished songs from my old computer, before I bought a new one last year. There isn't really any unifying theme or feel here, these songs were recorded at various times in various places with various levels of effort. Some of them I am proud of, others I am not so sure. I will leave it to the listener to decide which are which, though. Everybody has different tastes, you know?

424LYFE!
So the next batch of music that I will share comes from the summer of 2009, when I was feeling very nostalgic for the early 90's salad days of underground DIY rock. In an effort to recreate that "olde tyme feeling," I bought a replica of my old Tascam 424 portastudio 4-track cassette recorder on e-bay. The following album was recorded entirely on the 4-track, with just a few minor adjustments of levels on the computer at the end.
If any of these songs remind you of the early 90's, that probably because some of them were written in the early 90's. The music was, anyway. I re-wrote most of the lyrics, because pimply 14-year-old me was not exactly Bob Dylan. But my original idea was that I would document ALL of my old songs in their original format (cassette hiss and all). I gave up on the idea about 8 songs in. I'm not really super excited about this recording in general, really, and it has taught me that nostalgia is not the greatest conduit of creativity.

Start at the Beginning
First, there was The Red Wheelbarrow. In 2006, I released a 3-song vinyl 7" EP which you can listen to here:
You can download these songs, but kindly take note, these are the only 3 songs that I will charge $$ to download, since the folks at Actually Records were nice enough to help me get the vinyl pressed, and these songs really should be listened to in that format. Go to the Actually Records website to order the 7". Your purist heart will thank you.
Next, I collected some of the other home-recorded songs recorded between 2005 and 2008 and digitally released them as "How I Kept It Precious" in 2008:
You can download these songs and I won't even charge you a cent (although you have the option to "name your own price" if your heart is bleeding and your wallet is fat).
